Liar Liar

Awe, Jim Carrey is so great. He regularly turns hackneyed family material into pleasantly engaging physical comedy. Such is the case with 'Liar Liar'. The plot is pretty bland (Carrey is an unscrupulous lawyer with an ex and a distant son who wishes him into not being able to lie for 24 hours. Work difficult and ultimately a chase scene and pre-9/11 airport security allows family reunification to ensue), and without Carrey's involvement I'd be falling asleep. Thankfully the plot allows plenty of room for him to do what he does best, and this film has some of Carrey's best gurning.

If you're not familiar with Jimmy C 123 you might be rolling your eyes and picturing an Adam Sandler film when I use words like "physical comedy" and "gurning", but honestly Jim Carrey is to physical comedy what Fred Astaire is to tap. The worst thing about the acting in this film to me was being distracted by how irritatingly underwhelming the other character's reactions to Carrey's antics were.
The plot itself was bland, the other actors were meh, and the there was nothing particularly interesting about the cinematography or the score (super 90s) or anything. Really the only saving grace was that the director was lucky enough to hit the Carrey goldmine with The Claw.
