This
is a fine action sci-fi film. It just didn't need to be another
'RoboCop' movie. It took itself a little too seriously for my liking,
becoming plain old social commentary rather than the gross-out absurd
satire of the original.
A
good example of this is the Fox style situation room type thing
presented by Samuel L Jackson. It was alright, it was just never that
funny. I get the point - I'd just like to be enjoying the movie on
more than one level as I do. It pales in contrast to the brilliant
news shorts and adverts in the original film, which I looked forward
to during the movie. I get that they tried to go at it from a
different direction, and in a way I appreciate that, but while it's
fine (but not great) as it's own thing, it's obviously going to be
compared to the original.
And
there's not enough gore! No mutated toxic waste guys being hit by
cars and exploding in this one. There's far more of a focus on the
family, taking a more traditional western film style. I hated this,
but each to their own. Keeping in the Hollywood trend, the wife and
son characters were generic and boring.
The
villains weren't even as hateable as in the original. The action
sequences were fine, but nothing too memorable. Same goes for the
cinematography, which worked until they tried something interesting
at which point it tended to feel awkward.
