Jeez.
If you're thinking of watching this (and, I guess, want a film about
people trying to survive an underwater catastrophe specifically?
Freak) just watch 'The Poseidon Adventure' instead - hell, watch the
2005 remake even, and that wasn't very good (though I actually know a
guy who did a lot of the effects for it - and they were great! It was
more pacing and acting problems).
Some
guys get stuck in a sub and then die one by one, until the one that's
clearly going to be the sole survivor ends up being the sole
survivor. That's literally it.
It's
so dreadfully predictable that I was totally zoned out for most of
the film. I think I ended up writing a long email to my father at the
same time, or something. The acting was passable at times, and poor
at others. The pacing was dreadful - the plot moved along at a crawl.
The camerawork was pretty basic for the most part, as was the
lighting.
And
it was there that the film could have shone. They could have created
a freaky enclosed atmosphere with some choice cinematography - even
'Gravity' tried this – it's just that the result that time was... funny.
The
acting is another missed opportunity. It was really nothing special,
and I think it's a combination of the actor's half-hearted
performances and the constrictively bland script. This could have
been a great character piece, but they're not much more than either
outlines or clichés, and are never effectively built up into
anything with more nuance.
