Sort
of a more serious 'Lake Placid', 'Rogue' is has a little of that
TV-movie vibe.
It's
a bit too self serious to really be enjoyable, though the plot isn'
too bad. Beggining in the usual manner, we see our survivors
eventually trapped on an island for what feels like forever. When
they do make it off, weirdly, we split up and stick with the main
character for the rest of the film, not really seeing the rest of the
group again. This allows for a one-on-one climactic battle scene,
without the need to kill off every other character, but it all felt
kinda weird.
This
plot subversion could have worked nicely, I just don't think it was
implemented very well. The pacing of the whole film is all over the
place, and doesn't help. The acting and dialogue is pretty good, but
it's hampered by the often too dark lighting and faintly lousy
effects. Overall I was just never sure weather this was “meh”
kind of a monster horror, or just a good TV-movie, or if I was meant
to be laughing at it.
Oh
yeah and that guy from 'Avatar' was in it, and died is a really weird
and oddly amusing way - another unintentional tonal problem, which
this film is full of.
