Tremors

Silly fun with worms, 'Tremors' reminds me of that game 'Death Worm', which I played for several weeks on end when I was about 10 (not sure if that's the link to the exact game I played - I seem to remember the worm growing wings at some point, but maybe I'm just not as good at it anymore... yes, I played it again... twice).
A group of rednecks are trapped in a Nevada valley by massive worm monsters, and spend most of the movie either trying to avoid them or shooting the shit out of them. The creatures themselves go unexplained (save for a short scene where the main characters wonder aloud at their origins) and I think this air of mystery works to the movie's rediculous benefit. Kevin Bacon and his nose play the leading role, along with a worldly friend character and an intelligent college girl character, and they spend most of the movie bumming around, vaguely figuring out about the worms, and then defeating them.

I like the design of said worms, and I like the rules that they have: they detect vibrations, so they can hear where people are walking/driving/whatever, but if you stand still they might not get you. Also, they cant burrow through stone, obviously. These traits are layed out to us fairly early on, and it's good in a simple movie like this to understand your villain's limitations.
The characters were all pretty good too, though many of the more minor ones were somewhat one note. The acting was fine, though, and they did seem to be having fun. I see that there are a bunch of sequels to this, which I don't think I'll bother watching any time soon, but this was a fun caper in Nevada, and made me a little nostalgic for it's rolling dirt hills to be honest.
