Wow, so that police guy is gruff, huh. Like, his gruffness would be on a comedic level if this wasn't definitely not a comedy. It kind of works in this, though.
I'm sorry. I wrote this off pretty fast as being the usual haunted house type thing, and in my head it would therefore be incapable of getting a score over 30. The cinematography is really interesting, though, and the acting is great.
Washed out colours proliferate throughout. Nothing in this world ever really looks very nice, it's all just bleak. The sounds and music are well used, loud at times and so soft that you have to strain to hear at others. There are also several very nicely shot dream sequences (and in these I especially liked the use of slo-mo). The story gets played out gradually, with clues being revealed as it goes along. Much of the plot itself looks like a murder mystery, though the ending is obviously more actiony. That being said, it doesn't suddenly go crazy. There are jolts of action, sure, but the plot is well paced throughout.
There are a few nice twists. The sister disappearing straight away is one of them, as you think that she'll be the main character. It's also a shock when the gruff cop is suddenly murdered (I thought that he and the younger sister might have gotten together by the end of the movie). The finale was also well done. Tense and with a payoff, at one point I really doubted she'd survive.
