Adam and Paul

A nice bleak comedy about two junkies living in and around Dublin, 'Adam and Paul' tells the story of a day in their lives. Both are useless, and spend their entire time bumming beer and fags off others, stealing food, and trying to make money however they can, so that they can get some heroin. Adam is the leader of the two, and is only averagely stupid, while Paul is so dim that he relies on Adam's leadership to make literally any decision. It's really a great duo. They work well as a double act, reminding me of the Sir Digby Chicken Caesar and Ginger sketches from 'That Michael and Webb Look'.

Pretty much everyone has stopped caring since they dropped out of school, and since then they have become homeless. It's painful as the two women under the tree belittle Adam and Paul, and Paul just keeps apologising. the women get no pleasure out of it, and the whole situation ends up just bringing them all down. The pair are frequently told to stay away from Adams sister, who is clean now and lives in a flat, and has a job and a baby.
When they eventually visit her, there is a very funny scene as they talk each other into stealing the TV, but are interrupted by her baby crying. They go to the babies room, and a sweet moment ensues as they cuddle it back to sleep. They are interrupted by the sister, and while initially Adam imagines her joining in, reality snaps back and she is angry.
Ultimately it's a very moving film, as Paul wakes up the next morning on a beach to find that Adam has overdosed. He is visibly distraught, but if anyone thought this would make him change his ways they would be wrong, as he searches his only friend's body for the heroin, before leaving.
